Outsourced finance provider

An outsourced finance provider takes the school's transactional and reporting finance function as a contracted service. The principal providers in the UK include SBS (formerly Schools Business Services), Strictly Education, Juniper Education and a number of regional LA-spinout providers. Pricing is quote-only and scoped per school.

Principal providers

SBS, Strictly Education and Juniper Education are the most widely used national providers. Most local authorities also operate or recommend a regional school-finance service for their maintained schools. Providers do not publish per-school rates; contracts are scoped per school and quoted by negotiation.[1][2][3]

Scope

A typical outsourced finance contract covers transactional finance (purchase ledger, sales ledger, cashbook), management accounts to a defined timetable, payroll administration, and statutory return support. Scope normally excludes governance, capital project leadership, strategic procurement and HR. Those remain with the headteacher and the senior leadership team.

When outsourcing beats in-house

Outsourcing typically beats an in-house permanent bursar when the school is small, the office team is experienced and the headteacher has the appetite to own strategy directly. It rarely beats an in-house bursar for schools above 500 pupils or for schools with active capital projects.
